Tracing Bharat: A Creative Exploration of India’s Past

by SAI Admin

29 April, 2025

On 26 April 2025, the students of Class VI-M (Cambridge) at SAI International School embarked on an enriching journey through time by participating in a creative map-making activity inspired by their History chapter, India: That is Bharat. This interactive exercise aimed to deepen students' understanding of the nation’s historical evolution by blending imagination with geography.

The young learners showcased their interpretation of India’s rich past through carefully illustrated maps. Some students recreated the ancient Sapta Sindhu region as described in the Rigveda, beautifully highlighting the sacred rivers—Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, and the long-lost Sarasvati—that once nurtured early Vedic civilization. Others chose to represent India through the lens of the Mahabharata, giving visual form to the epic’s depiction of the subcontinent.

Adding a contemporary dimension to the activity, several students crafted modern political maps of India, accurately labeling all states, union territories, and their capitals. This blend of ancient and modern perspectives offered students a holistic view of India’s geographical and cultural journey through the ages.

The activity was not only a creative outlet but also a meaningful educational experience, enabling students to hone their cartographic skills while building a deeper connection with India’s diverse historical identity. Through this hands-on approach, the Class VI students demonstrated both artistic expression and academic insight, turning history into a dynamic and engaging subject.
