"The essence of global health equity is the idea that something so precious as health might be viewed as a right." ~ Paul Farmer

SAI International School conducted an insightful Capacity Building Programme affiliated to CBSE ,COE Bhubaneswar on the Topic “Health & Wellness” on February 10-11, 2023. The workshop received an overwhelming participation from more than 100 teachers & participants from various schools, across Bhubaneswar, Khorda and also from Jharkhand. It was an amazing experience for all participants to share the knowledge from NCERT CBSE UNESCO program and foster further awareness so as to create more ambassadors for the School Health & Wellness Program. The resource persons for this workshop were Mrs. Swati Sengupta from SAI International School & Mrs. Jhinuk Duuta Ray from ODB Public School, BBSR.

The workshop was instrumental in terms of giving priority to a curriculum framework with focus on life skills enhancement with relevant themes, learning outcomes, content outline and a roadmap for implementing the initiative has been developed for all stages of school education beginning with pre-primary to Senior Secondary stages.

The workshop dealt with 11 modules on the theme that deal with needs and concerns of the different age groups, ranging from Growing up Healthy, Emotional & Mental Well Being, Interpersonal Relationships, Values and Citizenship, Gender Equality, Nutrition Health & Sanitation, Prevention of substance Misuse, Safety & Security, Voicing against Violence & Safe use of Internet - each module having a key focus to the current challenges and brainstorming ideas to possible ways of addressing them, creating a sensitization.

The participants were actively engaged in Case Studies, Audio Visuals, GDs, role plays, Quiz, sharing of experiences and brainstorming ideas.

World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity. Well-being is a combination of physical, mental, emotional and social health factors and is strongly linked to happiness and life satisfaction. While health is an important goal for all age groups, investments in the health and well-being of children and adolescents are particularly cost effective and yield multiple benefits. If India has to achieve the sustainable development goal of good health and well-being for everyone at all ages, the unique needs of this substantive proportion of the population cannot be ignored. The major essence conveyed by this capacity building program was making each participant of the workshop realize about how health and well-being are universal pursuits at individual, community, national and global levels.

The school health programme, envisions to equip, motivate and support children to actively contribute towards the development of self and society. The objectives of the programme are to increase knowledge, inculcate positive attitudes and enhance life skills in order to promote informed, responsible and healthy behaviour among school going children. Such CBSE Programmes for Teachers are the foundation on which a quality education system rests, the Board, through its various endeavours, aims at improving teacher quality. The principles laid down in the National Curriculum Framework of Teacher Education and the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 emphasise that continuous teacher training has a crucial role to play in the overall framework of quality education.
