SAIMUN 2020

The 8th edition of SAIMUN 2020 was held on August 13 and 14, 2020 adopting the digital route. The two-day e-conference was participated by 750 delegates from 34 schools, across nine countries of the globe like Australia, Japan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Vietnam, USA, Uganda and India. The young students debated on several contemporary global issues in twenty different committees in two groups.

Inaugural Session

The inaugural session of eSAIMUN 2020 was attended by Ambassador Kelly Craft, Permanent Representative, U.S. Mission to the United Nations at New York, Mr Joel Reifman, Consul General, U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad, Mr Daniel Sim, Deputy Consul General, Australian Consulate in Kolkata, Mr Nick Low, British Deputy High Commissioner to Kolkata, and Dr Bijaya Kumar Sahoo, Founder and Mentor SAI International Education Group as the key note speakers.

The opening session was graced with as inspiring video message by Secretary-General to the United Nations, H.E.  António Guterres, who spoke on the importance of sustainable development, for the future in all countries. The session was introduced by Secretary General SAIMUN 2020 Anurag Patnaik, who spoke about the significance of the two-day conference.

UNIC Plenary Session

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of United Nations and to strengthen the eight years of partnership with UNIC, a special plenary session was organised at eSAIMUN 2020 on Thursday, August 13, 2020. The session was facilitated by Shri Rajiv Chandran, National Information Officer (and currently Officer-in-Charge), United Nations Office in India and Bhutan.  In his address to the students, Shri Chandran said that the scale and scope of today’s challenges are truly global and it needs global leadership and global partnership to tackle the problems. He inspired the students to understand their individual responsibility and the power of multilateralism to ensure human rights for all.

Global Village

The Global Village held on the 2nd day of eSAIMUN reflected the true essence of Internationalism. The event with the motto of connecting the whole world under one canopy was attended by students from Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, USA, Australia, Uganda, UAE and India showcased their culture in the digital platform. The International delegates spoke about cuisine, dance forms, music, art and craft of their respective countries. A panel discussion was held where the issues related to COVID and post COVID was debated by the budding minds.

SAIMUN 2020 Valedictory Ceremony

The Valedictory ceremony of the 8th edition of SAI Model United Nations Conference was held online on Friday, August 14, 2020. It was graced by Ms. Barbara Wickham, OBE, Director, British Council India, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Palaces, Buganda Kingdom, Uganda, H.E. Kyewalabye Male David, Climate Activist & UN Youth Advisor on Climate Change, Ms. Archana Soreng and Founder and Mentor SAI International, Dr. Bijaya Sahoo.

Head Girl Shivangi Vikas Mishra welcomed the revered guests and the delegates to the virtual ceremony. Proposing the vote of thanks, Secretary General Anurag Patnaik said that eSAIMUN was an insightful experience where students may be physically apart but united by hearts and minds, for a common cause.

Musical Evening

Bollywood singer Ms. Lisa Mishra enthralled everyone during the musical evening. She sangs songs like Kabira, Wakhra etc, which was greatly loved by the participants. The rejuvenating session was an apt ending to one of the vibrant and enriching Model United Nations.

SAIMUN, focusing on the theme, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – One World, One Family, has been a changing platform for all the delegates to shape talent and leadership apart from fostering global harmony and peace. SAIMUN is held every year to build leadership skills; increase global literacy and expand critical thinking in a student by exposing them to the working of the United Nations.
